Car dealership
A franchised car dealership with workshop as a walkable model: how a car gets from reception to handover in one day and where lifts, parts or inspections slow it down.
All data are fictional, brand and manufacturer included. The model can be adapted to your dealership's real data and then shows what no system delivers at a glance today – for example jobs per hour and lift, or days in stock per used car.
This dealership workshop simulation shows the fictional AUTOHAUS KESTRUP, a franchised dealer with workshop, seven buildings and 18 departments. At half past seven the cars queue at reception, at noon the lifts are full – and by evening every car should be ready to collect.
The main process starts with a customer whose brake squeaks. The service adviser walks round the car with her, diagnostics reads the fault memory and she approves new brake discs on a video call. The parts counter issues the parts or places an express order, a technician works on the lift and, if due, the roadworthiness test is added. Final check, test drive and wash are followed by invoice and handover. Model target: ready to collect within six hours.
New car sales, accident repairs and used car buying run alongside; brand and manufacturer in the model are invented. Owners and managing directors, service and sales managers, service reception, HR and training will find this page most useful.

What you can change
Controls
- Workshop jobs: Tyre changes, holiday checks, winter checks: this many cars arrive in the morning.
- Technicians in the workshop: How many cars are on the lifts at once.
- Parts stock: More parts in stock: fewer express orders, but more capital tied up (model assumption).
- Used car buying: More purchases fill the lot – and the workshop lifts.
- Body and paint bays: Straightening bays and paint booths for accident and used cars.
Disruptions
- Sick wave in the workshop: For ten days three in ten technicians are off – cars stay longer.
- Hailstorm: For three weeks four times as many damage cases arrive – dents on roofs and bonnets.
- Supply shortage at the parts centre: For two weeks express orders and body parts take three times as long.
- Dealer management system fails: For three hours no reception, no invoice, no handover.
What a dealership gets
-
01
The dealership as a model
Seven buildings from showroom to car wash, each of them opens up. Every car is a point of light on its way to the next station.
-
02
The workshop day in time-lapse
The event simulation runs services, accident cars, new and used cars at the same time. At noon you see where cars wait for a lift.
-
03
Stock or cash
Five controls and four disruptions, from parts stock to a dealer management system outage. When cars are stuck, a tip suggests the control, and a button applies the setting.
-
04
Diagrams instead of spreadsheets
14 diagrams in four groups calculate live – from the daily rhythm of reception to the car's routes across the site.
-
05
For showroom and training room
Runs in the browser, including on a large screen or projection in the showroom. A guided tour in eight steps explains how to start.
-
06
Designed, not off the peg
The model comes from an artist and developer. A car maker, an insurer, a trades business and 32 more organisations share the same overview.
Basis and limits
Fictional company and fictional brand · model based on researched industry structures · no statement about real companies
1 case = 1 workshop job, 1 new car purchase, 1 accident car or 1 offered used car · 1 figure ≈ 3 employees
All volumes, durations, rates and capacities are model assumptions, not values of a real dealership. The ARVEN brand and manufacturer are invented.
The workshop has no opening hours in the model: whatever is not done in the evening continues overnight. Measured until “ready”, at most 6 hours after reception.
Documented: dealers as independent businesses, registration at the registration office, roadworthiness tests by testing organisations, warranty on used car sales.
Public sources the model is based on:
- ZDK – Zentralverband Deutsches Kraftfahrzeuggewerbe: Zahlen & Fakten
- Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt: Neuzulassungen und Besitzumschreibungen
- Fahrzeug-Zulassungsverordnung (FZV)
- StVZO § 29 (Hauptuntersuchung)
- BGB §§ 434, 437, 476 (Mängelhaftung beim Kauf)
- Vertikal-GVO (EU) 2022/720
