Minimal Logistik: Duisburg · logport I (Rheinhausen) im Modell von schräg oben

Duisburg · logport I (Rheinhausen)

A trimodal inland port on the Rhine as a walkable model: Rhine barges with sea containers from Rotterdam, gantries and yard, trains to the south, Eastern Europe and Asia, trucks into the region.

Real are the location, terrain and buildings (official NRW elevation data, OpenStreetMap) and the site profile figures. Volumes, rhythms and vehicle numbers are model assumptions, processes accelerated. With your data, the model also shows ships per water level, trains per route and gate waits.

The Duisburg inland port with logport I in Rheinhausen as a running model: Rhine barges – large motor cargo vessels of 110 m with about 200 TEU – bring sea containers from Rotterdam. Gantries place them in the yard, whose fill level equals the stock of the Duisburg node – the same figure as on the Germany map.

Onward it is trimodal: by train towards the south along the Rhine-Alpine corridor, to Eastern Europe and Asia, by truck into the region or by canal barge to Dortmund. In the model, 47 % of the volume moves by water, 37 % by rail and only 16 % by road, almost nine tenths of it container goods. Low water or a Rhine closure hit here first: ships sail half loaded or not at all, and rail and trucks take over what they can.

Real are the location, terrain and buildings, taken from official NRW elevation data and OpenStreetMap, and the figures in the site profile, taken from public information, such as two container terminals on logport I. Daily volumes, rhythms and vehicle numbers are model assumptions in the right order of magnitude; processes run accelerated. This page is for port and terminal operations, logistics companies, local authorities and economic development, chambers, schools and exhibitions.

Facilities and areas in the model

  • Gantries at the harbour basin

Rhine barges (large motor cargo vessel, 110 m, about 200 TEU) are unloaded and loaded. logport I: two container terminals, trimodal ship, rail, truck.

  • Container yard

Fill level = stock of the Duisburg hub in the model (same figure as on the map).

  • Train tracks

Container trains towards the south (Rhine-Alpine corridor), Eastern Europe and Asia.

  • Truck gate

Trucks collect containers for the region; when it gets busy they queue at the gate.

Supply chain ‘Containers Rotterdam → Dortmund’ (passes through this site)

  1. 01Rotterdam: containers from the sea ship onto the Rhine barge
  2. 02Up the Rhine to Duisburg – about 200 km upstream
  3. 03Duisburg: transhipment from Rhine barge to canal barge, rail and truck
  4. 04Via the Rhine-Herne and Dortmund-Ems canals to Dortmund (ships up to 110 m, two tiers)
  5. 05Dortmund, container terminal at the canal: from barge to truck – about 4 km to the Westfalenhütte plant
  6. 06Delivered: Westfalenhütte plant. Goods from Duisburg go there (documented); this container chain is an example (model)

Try the scenario ‘Dry summer’

  1. 01tap it in the deck
  2. 02vehicles, yards and traffic-light rings at the site react at once
  3. 03time 4× shows how it develops

How an inland port can use the model

  • Operations and planning

What happens when the Rhine falls? In low water, ships sail half loaded, more trips are needed and freight moves to rail. The model shows how yard, tracks and gate fill up as it happens.

    対象Port and terminal operations, planning

  • Onboarding and training

Ride along with key F: a Rhine barge from waiting to the quay, a container train being loaded, a truck from the gate to the loading point. One line says what is happening.

対象New staff, port and logistics trainees

  • Local authorities and economic development

The supply chain ‘Containers Rotterdam → Dortmund’ runs about 200 km up the Rhine to Duisburg and on via the canals. It shows how the Ruhr depends on the seaport.

    対象Local authorities, economic development, chambers

  • Schools, universities, museums

What does trimodal mean? Ship, rail and truck meet at the same basin, and a container changes mode in plain view – also in the demo without anyone at the controls.

    対象Schools, universities, museums and exhibitions

  • Public communication

The ‘Dry summer’ scenario brings low water on the Rhine: ships sail half loaded and freight moves to rail. Four times the speed shows how it develops, and one tap brings back today.

    対象Public relations, associations, inland shipping

What you can change

Controls

  • Economy: How much is produced and traded overall. Acts on all flows of Duisburg logport I.
  • Consumer demand: Container goods and food for retail. Weight here about 62 % of the volume.
  • Industrial output: Raw materials, steel, parts, chemicals. Weight here about 38 % of the volume.
  • Transport cost / tolls: Expensive roads shift freight to rail and water. Here 16 % of the volume goes by road.
  • Season: Spring: more building materials and seed, raw materials +8 %, food +5 %. Autumn: harvest (food +18 %), Christmas run-up (containers +8 %), first heating oil deliveries. Winter: heating oil and Christmas trade, less road capacity.

Disruptions

  • Disruption: Motorway: One lane remains, the detour loads the neighbouring routes.
  • Disruption: Rail strike: Freight trains stand still, trucks and ships take over part, stocks pile up.
  • Disruption: Rhine closed (hits this site hardest): No ship between Rotterdam and Basel, rail and road at their limit.
  • Extreme weather: Flood: Rhine closed, ships lie idle, rail and trucks take over where they can.
  • Extreme weather: Low water (hits this site hardest): Ships sail half loaded, more trips, shift to rail.
  • Extreme weather: Snow and ice: Bottlenecks overloaded, canals partly frozen.

What the model gives an inland port

  • 01

    Three modes at one basin

Ship, rail and truck run at the same time. You see how a sea container from Rotterdam finds its way into the hinterland.

  • 02

The water level as a lever

Trigger flood, low water or a Rhine closure. Rail and trucks take over what they can, and the model shows where that ends.

  • 03

Site and map in one model

The yard’s fill level is the Duisburg node’s figure on the Germany map, shown with live values in the site profile.

  • 04

    Connected to the Ruhr

The supply chain to Dortmund shows the transfer from Rhine barge to canal barge, rail and truck.

  • 05

    For visits and big screens

Runs in the browser and on large projections, with a demo that starts without anyone at the controls.
